This guidebook, entitled “Teaching Mindfulness in Classrooms”, is a collection of lesson plans designed to integrate mindfulness into various subjects. When utilizing these plans, teachers are not required to use extra hours to teach mindfulness; instead, they can incorporate mindfulness elements into language subjects, mathematics, general studies, visual arts, and other subjects.
This guidebook is organized into two sections. The first section features 12 “Mindfulness-Integrated Lesson Plans,” with six designed for primary schools and six for secondary schools. The lesson plans cover a variety of subjects, including languages, mathematics, humanities, music, visual arts, physical education, and literature. While most lesson plans are written in Chinese, Chapters 3, 9, and 11 are written in English, focusing on lower primary English language, lower secondary mathematics, and lower secondary English literature, respectively. These lesson plans were collaboratively developed by frontline teachers, educational psychologists, and a school development officer from the Jockey Club “Peace and Awareness” Mindfulness Culture in Schools Initiatives’. Most lesson plans are supplemented by teaching materials such as PowerPoint slides, mindfulness practice audio guides, and worksheets.
The second section features up to 36 “Mindfulness Activities” that can be integrated into any lesson. These activities are primarily developed by experienced mindfulness instructors and are designed for flexible use by educators. Many also come with supplementary materials, such as presentation slides, mindfulness practice audio guides and videos.
“Teaching Mindfulness in Classrooms” and all supplementary materials are available for educators to use in their schools for free, provided that the following conditions are met:
- Proper Attribution: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and The University of Hong Kong are clearly acknowledged as joint copyright holders of the materials.
- Eligibility: Users meet the relevant eligibility requirements
- Relevant Usage: Materials are used to promote mindfulness culture in schools
- Compliance: All relevant usage guidelines must be followed.
- Registration: Users must register on our website before downloading the materials.
We hope that teachers using this guidebook have a foundational understanding of mindfulness. As an eight-week mindfulness course is the recommended introduction to mindfulness learning, we expect users to have completed at least one of such courses before utilizing these materials.
