“I Have Arrived” Movie Screening and Parent-Child Mindfulness Workshop

Objectives of the Workshop

This Film Appreciation & Parent-Child Mindfulness Workshop aims to guide parents and children to re-examine their relationship through a film screening and follow-up interactive sessions, learning to connect with each other through a mindful attitude. Furthermore, through the Mindful Popcorn, a collection of parent-child mindfulness activities or tips, parents and children can learn mindfulness practices to care for their own and each other’s emotions in daily life.

Facilitator of the workshop

The workshop can be conducted by teachers, counselors in schools, Parent-Teacher Association representatives, or social workers from family service centers. It is desirable for facilitators to have a basic understanding of mindfulness, e.g., having completed an eight-week MBCT, MBSR, or .b Foundations. However, even without previous experience in mindfulness, facilitators can learn alongside participants by watching the movie, exploring mindfulness practices, and reflecting on parent-child relationships together, given the support of this resource package. The basic training on mindfulness takes eight weeks while mindfulness teacher training takes years.

The facilitators of this workshop are not considered as mindfulness teachers. Their role is to support participants’ learning with the resources provided in this package, including the manual, presentation slides, videos, and audio recordings. In addition, this workshop is not intended to be a comprehensive mindfulness course. It only serves as an introduction to mindfulness. Participants who wish to practice and learn mindfulness further may refer to the information on the JC PandA website at www.jcpanda.hk.

Target Participants

The target participants of the workshop are primary students and their parents. The number of participants depends on the availability of facilitators and venue arrangements. With sufficient staffing and a suitable venue, such as a cinema or a school hall, the workshop can accommodate up to one hundred participants. Alternatively, when led by one or two facilitators in a smaller classroom setting, the workshop can be conducted with just around ten participants.

The programme comprises four parts:
1. Movie Screening (30 minutes)
2. Movie Trivia Quiz (approximately 10 minutes)
3. Reflection and Sharing Session (approximately 25 minutes)

Duration of Workshop

This workshop lasts approximately for 90 minutes. The duration and format may be adapted according to the time available and the needs of the participants, with flexibility in the amount of time devoted to reflection and sharing. If time is limited, the introduction to Mindful Popcorn may be omitted, with the workshop focusing on the movie screening and the subsequent reflection and sharing session.
