Social Innovation in the Faculty of Social Sciences

In the Faculty of Social Sciences, we seek to nurture an understanding of social issues through first-hand practical experiences in local organisations.  These experiences provide a training platform for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired at the University to real work situations, thereby assisting students to become more socially aware.  Students develop critical thinking and analytical abilities so that they can identify innovative solutions to complex problems.  Working with others in the community enables students to improve their interpersonal and communication skills.

Global Citizenship in the Faculty of Social Sciences

In the Faculty of Social Sciences, we seek to equip our students with knowledge, qualifications and values to participate, as active citizens of the global village.  Our curriculum is further enhanced by in student activities and off-campus learning opportunities, including overseas internships, exchange programmes and summer school programmes approved by the Faculty.

How to fulfil the Social Innovation requirement?

Students can satisfy the Social Innovation requirement by completing FOSS2018 Social Innovation Internship (SI2).  FOSS2018 Social Innovation Internship (SI2) is a non-paid, 12-credit advanced course offered to all full-time undergraduate students of the Faculty of Social Sciences who have completed their first or second year of study.  Students are strongly recommended to complete the requirement not later than the second semester of the final year of studies.  Students may undertake their internships either during term time (part-time) or in the summer (full-time).

How to fulfil the Global Citizenship requirement?

Students can satisfy the Global Citizenship requirement in one of the following two ways:

  • Completing FOSS2019 Global Citizenship Internship (12 credits)
  • Undertaking 12 credits of advanced courses from an exchange programme or other summer programme approved by the Faculty.

When applying for an internship or exchange programme offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, students must declare if they are seeking to fulfil the Global Citizenship requirement. Students are strongly recommended to meet the Global Citizenship requirement by the Second Semester of their final year of studies.
