Ocean Park x Mr. Men Little Miss Unique Summer Party

For the purpose of further promoting caring and social inclusion in the community, the Project organised “Unique Summer Party” with the renowned children’s book “Mr. Men Little Miss” at Ocean Park in the summer of 2022. Project ambassador “Bling Bling” and characters of “Mr. Men Little Miss” invited all the adults and children in Hong Kong to have fun and learn knowledge of social inclusion.

JC A-Connect x Ocean Park Journey of Social Inclusion Launching Ceremony was held on July 23, and 30 families of children with ASD were invited to attend the event, marking the official start of the “Unique Summer Party”. Dr. Leung Cheuk-wai, Executive Director (Charities and Community) of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, delivered a speech at the launching ceremony. He indicated that the Jockey Club Charities Trust attaches great importance to the needs of students with ASD and their parents, and has donated more than HK$410 million to support the JC A-Connect project over the years, hoping that all sectors of the community can value the importance of building an inclusive society, and to let children with ASD shine. After the ceremony, the Project’s NGO partners, TWGHs, SAHK and HKYWCA led the beneficiary families to the Summit to participate in the CST workshops specially designed for the Project.

CST Game Area and Workshops

The Project turned CST parent-child toy set into a giant installation. Participants may play different roles in daily lives of the city, such as supermarket cashiers, car repairmen, etc. Through interactive games, parents are encouraged to pay attention to their children’s way of playing, and use evidence-based parenting skills to enhance interactive communication while playing. At the same time, CST workshops were held every Saturday where professionals from three different NGOs taught practical parenting skills to parents of children with ASD.

Storytelling Workshops

The team of educational psychologists from HKU conducted a series of storytelling workshops with Mr. Men Little Miss’s picture book for children with ASD and their parents every Sunday. Children can recognise their qualities, learn to accept their strengths and weaknesses, positive and negative emotions via paired reading with their own parents.

Treasure Hunt

For the game “Treasure Hunt”, characters of Mr. Men Little Miss will play hide-and-seek with everyone in the Park. Participants only need to find their traces while visiting different iconic attractions and put the correct stickers of the characters on the booklet to redeem exquisite gifts. Children can also think of which characters best reflect themselves and their friends’ personal traits, and learn to understand and accept people with different personalities.

According to Dr. Kathy Wong, project consultant of JC A-Connect and chief lecturer of the Department of Psychology of HKU, there are different characters in our heart, no matter you are a child or an adult. And each character has its own uniqueness. Some traits and personalities are more prominent, some are more introverted; some grow with us, some only stay for a while, but every single one of them is equally important. It is hoped that participants can understand that each person is unique and learn to respect and tolerate each other through this activity.
