SENIOR SECONDARY LIBERAL STUDIES

This series of training programmes was organised for Liberal Studies teachers with the cooperation of the Education Bureau. The programme objective was to enhance Liberal Studies teachers’ understanding and knowledge concerning sustainable development.

 
 
 
A. Public Participation in Sustainable Development
 
The seminar has 2 aims:
To introduce some of the important definitions, dimensions, and principles of sustainable development
To illustrate major issues, dilemmas and debates on sustainable development
 
 
 
Special topic: Public participation in planning and development for Hong Kong
The seminar has 2 aims:
To introduce the concepts and best practice of public participation for sustainable development
To provide real-life case studies on the role and functions of public participation in a number of planning and infrastructure development projects in Hong Kong
 
 
 
B. Energy, environmental, and cultural conservation in modern China
The seminar has 2 aims:
To introduce China’s progress of green development and heritage protection in the context of sustainable development and suggest ways for improvement
To provide teachers with up-to-date information and charts for teaching purpose
 
 
 

 

 
   
 
C. Knowing More About Carbon Audit for Carbon Reduction
Supported by the Hongkong Bank Foundation, the training programme consisted of a 1) A guided visit to the Zero Carbon Building where presents the recent efforts in achieving energy efficiency by adopting advanced technology and green building design, showcasing the effectiveness of the carbon reduction measures applied in buildings and in our everyday living. Teachers could learn about the costs and benefits as well as some practical constraints of using green building technology. 2) An introductory course on carbon audit that provided an overview of carbon audit as a tool to measure our carbon footprint with a special focus on the demand-side energy management. Teachers were equipped with up-to-date knowledge and hands on skills in measuring carbon.
 
 
 

 

 
 
 
 
D. Sustainable Development - Field trip to Lung Mei Beach and Related Learning and Teaching Strategies
This half-day programme was organized for Liberal Studies teachers with the promotional help from the Education Bureau and the funding support from The Hongkong Bank Foundation. This programme consisted of a field trip to Lung Mei and role-play exercise. It aimed to enhance Liberal Studies teachers' understanding of sustainable development and their professional capacity.

E. Seminar “Sustainable Development and Pulic Engagement in Hong Kong and China”
This programme package consisted of three main parts: 1) an introductory seminar on sustainable development and two special topic seminars on sustainability issues in modern China and public participation in planning and development for Hong Kong; 2) suggested classroom activities including a carbon audit exercise and a role play on a local sustainability issue; and 3) site visits.
 
 
 
F. Seminar "Energy and sustainable development in China: Some modern Chinese cities’ experience"

Objectives:

To update teachers with the recent trends of low carbon and sustainable development in Chinese cities so as to help them discuss the theory and application of sustainable development using a cross-modular approach through the modules of "Modern China" and "Energy, Technology and the Environment" in the Liberal Studies curriculum.
 
 
 
G. Field trip to Lai Chi Wo and Related Learning and Teaching Strategies: Role-play exercise on policy-making for sustainable communities in Hong Kong
 
This programme consisted of two activities:
(1) Field trip to Lai Chi Wo
To offer cultural and natural tour visit opportunities and hands-on experience in eco-farming for teachers to explore building of sustainable villages in Hong Kong.
To help teachers get more familiar with using field trips to demonstrate sustainability-related topics in Liberal Studies.
 
 
 

(2) Role-play exercise on policy-making for sustainable communities in Hong Kong

 To help teachers understand the building of sustainable communities from the policy perspective and reinforce the experiences and knowledge learned from the field trip.

To help teachers get more familiar with using role-play exercises to teach sustainability-related topics in Liberal Studies.

 
 
 
 
 
H. Sustainable Development - Land supply strategies and housing development in Hong Kong
 

This programme was made up of a seminar and a field trip. The first part of the seminar was “Land Supply Strategies in Hong Kong” and the second part was “Green Belt Sites and Housing Development”. The field trip took teachers to visit three Green Belt sites in Tai Po and Ma On Shan proposed by the government for rezoning as residential areas.

 
 
 
I. Energy Development in Hong Kong, China and the World
 

This seminar was divided into two parts. Part I provided an overview of key trends in global energy production and consumption as well as their relationship to climate change. It highlighted the energy situation and major energy issues in China, such as the opportunities and challenges for new and renewable energy development. It also briefly included some discussion of Hong Kong's energy performance, future fuel mix for electricity generation and the challenges ahead. Part II focuses more on energy-related aspects of sustainable development, such as the growing trend of green buildings, energy efficiency measures and behavior change, etc.

 
 
 
SENIOR SECONDARY GEOGRAPHY
1-day Field Study Programme for Teachers on NSS Geography Curriculum at The University of Hong Kong - Kadoorie Centre and Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve
 

This training programme was specially designed to aid the learning and teaching of the topics "Disappearing Green Canopy", "Global Warming" and "Building a Sustainable City" in the NSS Geography Curriculum.

1-day Field Study Programme for Teachers on NSS Biology Curriculum
at Sheung Tsuen Park, Shek Kong and Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve

 
This training programme is specially designed to aid the learning and teaching of the topics "Human Impact on the Environment" and "Conservation" in the NSS Biology Curriculum (Applied Ecology).
