MOEI Thailand | News and Analysis

For daily news and analysis, there are two top Burma websites. One is The Irrawaddywww.irrawaddy.org (free registration required). The other is Burmanet — www.burmanet.org. It is also worth checking out the Democratic Voice of Burma — www.dvb.no — and BBC Burmese — www.bbc.co.uk/burmese. New Mandala focuses on Thailand, but covers other parts of peninsular Southeast Asia, including Burma — rspas.anu.edu.au/rmap/newmandala. Its analysis is always interesting and is well worth checking out from time to time (for Burma, see NM Topics on the sidebar to the right of the homepage). Network Myanmar carries news and commentary — networkmyanmar.org.

Getting behind the news, the Burma Campaign UK provides a full list of NGO reports (with brief descriptions) on its website — www.burmacampaign.org.uk/pm/reports.php. Overviews and reports are also available at some major foreign government websites, notably the US Department of State, which through the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor issues annual reports on human rights practices in Burma and many other countries around the world. In addition, leading INGOs often focus on Burma and carry excellent material on their websites. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, Open Society Justice Initiative, and Refugees International are all especially worth checking.

For the border zone close to Mae Sot, the Free Burma Rangers provide material — www.freeburmarangers.org. Some excellent documentaries that get behind daily news stories are available at PBS Frontline/World — search Burma at www.pbs.org/frontlineworld. YouTube also has many Burma videos of variable quality.

One general point is that when accessing Burma sites it is often necessary to work out which angle the report is coming from. Burma watchers are a very political group.
