S.C. Fan Memorial Lecture Faculty of Social Sciences
Abstract

Professor Slaughter will review seven fundamental American values: liberty, democracy, equality, justice, tolerance, humility, and faith. She will discuss how these values have shaped American law and American history, at times aspiring to achieve them and at other times falling far short. Properly understood not as American values but as universal values, with multiple ways of realizing them in different cultures and societies, these values can be a new basis for American foreign policy and for a new view of America in the world.
