Important notes
The assessment period for the 2018-2019 academic year will be as follow:
- First semester: December 8 - 22, 2018
- Second semester: May 6 - 25, 2019
1. Absence from Examination
If you are absent from the examination, the Examinations Office will send an email notification to your HKU email account, and you are reminded to take the appropriate action as follows:
a) Absence due to illness
A letter (NOT an email) should be sent to the Examinations Secretary to set out your case immediately. Please complete the "Form of Medical Certificate" (downloadable from the Examinations Office website at http://www.exam.hku.hk) and send to the Director of the University Health Service within 2 days after your course examination date.
b) Absence due to non-medical reason
A completed application form with justification should be sent to the Examinations Secretary within 2 days after your course examination date. The application form can be obtained from the Examinations Office by email at exam@hku.hk or in person at Room 10-26, Knowles Building, The University of Hong Kong.
This is a formal notice from the Faculty Office, we WILL NOT issue any follow-up letters to students regarding the above arrangement. The Faculty Office/Departments will inform you of the make-up arrangement, if any, when the final decision is reached by the Board of Examiners.
2. Release of examination results
Examination result of each course in the first and second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year will be available at the HKU Portal on January 17, 2019 (3:00pm) and June 26, 2019 (3:00pm)respectively.
Students can check their results of each course at the HKU Portal (http://hkuportal.hku.hk/login.html) by following the steps below:
Click “Self Service” → “Enrollment” → “View My Grades”
In addition to the final grade of each course, you can view the overall coursework and examination grades for courses offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences (i.e. courses with prefix FOSS, JMSC, GEOG, POLI, PSYC, SINO, SOCI and SOWK) at the HKU Portal:

For the graduates, please note that your HKU Portal account will not be valid after January 31, 2019 for first semester and July 10, 2019 for second semester. You are therefore advised to print a copy of your examination results for your own retention.
3. Procedures for checking examination results
Assessment results are determined after careful deliberation by the relevant Boards of Examiners and they are final. However, students may submit an application for checking the assessment results if they have sound reasons to believe that there is a procedural irregularity/technical error in the determination of the assessment results. Please refer to the Registry’s guidelines concerning the Procedures for Checking of Assessment Results of Taught Courses (document 111/511 amended) available on the website of the Examinations Office. Students should submit the completed application form (document SS55/511 amended) together with the proof of payment of the application fee (HK$200 for each assessment result to be checked) to the Faculty Office no later than two weeks after the announcement of the course’s final assessment result as determined by the relevant Boards of Examiners (i.e. January 30, 2019 for first semester and July 9, 2019 for second semester). Should there be any procedural irregularity/technical error in exchange_exam_result_framethe determination of a particular result and the assessment result in question is revised as a consequence, the application fee for checking that particular result will be refunded to the student.
4. Student Registration Card
Students are not required to return Student Registration Card after completion of studies at HKU.
5. Library materials on loan
Please ensure that you have returned all the books and materials to the library and settled all outstanding payments, such as library fines, if any, before your departure.
6. Personal contact information
To facilitate our communication with you in future, please check and update your correspondence address and contact number periodically via your HKU Portal by February 1, 2019 or July 10, 2019.
