Introduction

The HKU Social Sciences summer programme is 5-days 4 nights for S3-S5 secondary school students who want to explore an integrative and interactive Social Sciences multidisciplinary learning experience and have a taste of university life.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology matures, how it changes society and what governance options are available to make its application environmentally and economically sustainable? Disciplines in social science are the best positioned to answer all these important questions in this era. This 5-day residential summer camp will help you explore how Social Sciences disciplines shed light on the opportunities and challenges presented by the transformations in AI and technology.

Bringing perspectives from leading experts from the Departments of Geography, Journalism, Politics and Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work and Social Administration, and Sociology, students can broaden their perspectives and understandings through lectures, field visits and team projects.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Articulate how different social disciplines contribute to understanding challenges and opportunities of AI

2. Understand the implications of AI for different social groups (e.g., age, gender, economic background)

3. Generate interdisciplinary and multidimensional solutions to address emerging global challenges related to AI

4. Explore what are some of the ethical concerns and considerations related to the use of AI

Students will be divided into groups and each group will be mentored by a current Social Sciences student. On the last day of the programme, students are required to give a group project presentation.
