Programme Information

BASc

What is BASc?

  • The BASc curriculum equips students with an interdisciplinary focus and prepares them to make an impact by solving the world’s problems. Each student achieves these goals in a personalised and tailor-made manner whilst being supported by a mentor and other students from the BASc family.
  • Students will major in Interdisciplinary Studies where they will take five courses from each of the two pathways so that they gain knowledge from diverse disciplines. Students can also take an additional major/minors/electives to further enhance their interdisciplinarity.

 Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc)

BASc

What is BSocSc?

  • Students in BSocSc curriculum may choose to major in one of the six core disciplines: China Studies, Geography, Politics and Public Administration, Psychology, Social Policy and Social Development, and Sociology. The curriculum offers great flexibility for students to explore their academic interests during the first year of studies by taking different social sciences introductory courses. Starting from the second year of studies, students may declare one of the six disciplinary majors as their first major and further study on the selected discipline.

What is China Studies?

  • Jointly organised by Social Sciences and Arts, addresses the growing interest in the study of Greater China from a multi-disciplinary approach. Wide range of courses are offered to introduce China’s political, economical, social, and cultural traits in the past and present.
  • Offers experiential learning opportunities and exchanges that focus on China Studies on the Mainland, Taiwan, or any China Studies centre overseas.

 Bachelor of Social Sciences (Major in Geography)

What is Geography?

  • A diverse discipline that involves both natural and social sciences with a focus on the major issues facing societies in a rapidly changing world.
  • Provides students with an understanding of the relationships between people and the natural environment, how these relationships have changed with space and over time, and the role of geography in the issues and problems facing people, places and society.

What is Politics & Public Administration?

  • Aims to provide students with basic knowledge in political science and public administration and to develop students’ ability in critical analysis of complex political issues in the real world.

What is Psychology?

  • Allows students to develop basic skills across all areas of psychology, including the biological and cognitive bases of behaviour, developmental changes, social influences, and psychopathology.
  • Students may pursue professional training in applied aspects of psychology (e.g. Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology) and advanced research training in psychology after completion of the programme.

What is Social Policy and Social Development?

  • Aims to build students’ competency to become change agents in the society and their communities. Students are exposed to contemporary social development issues and social policy responses to these issues in the local and global contexts.
  • Students are equipped to be competent to work in non-profit, for-profit, and social enterprise sectors for social changes and to be innovators in these sectors.

What is Social Work?

  • The BSW curriculum covers various disciplines, including social welfare and social policy, specialised social work theory and practice, human behaviour and social environment, social research, law, sociology, and psychology. On successful completion of the curriculum, students are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Social Workers with the Hong Kong Social Workers Registration Board.

BASc

What is Journalism?

  • BJ is a communications-focused double-major curriculum for a digital age. Students use the journalism component of the curriculum to build critical thinking and communications skills across multiple media. By the end of the four-year curriculum, they will be able to produce accurate and deeply researched written work on a variety of subjects, shoot and edit compelling video documentaries, and create data-driven online journalism.
  • A diverse faculty and student body ensure a lively learning environment that feeds students’ curiosity about the world. Class size is kept small to foster classroom discussion as well as the family feeling that makes the Journalism and Media Studies Centre a very special place at HKU.

What is BSocSc(Govt&Laws)&LLB?

  • Jointly offered by the Department of Politics and Public Administration and the Faculty of Law, the 5-year programme enables students to study two curricula and be awarded two degrees upon completion. The curriculum consists of a combination of Social Sciences and Law courses.
  • Satisfactory completion of five years in the programme leads to the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Government and Laws) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Students may also choose at the end of the second year to exit with only a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Government and Laws) upon completion of the fourth year of study.

  • This 4-year undergraduate dual degree programme will give students two Bachelor’s degrees from two highly respected international universities – one from Europe – Sciences Po and one from Asia – HKU. Students will spend the first two years in France and the third and fourth years in Hong Kong.

Students will complete 3 years of study at HKU and apply to Geneva for admission to one of their designated MA programmes.

  • Students, upon successful completion of this 4-year undergraduate dual degree programme will earn two Bachelor’s degrees – one from USA – UC Berkeley – and one from Asia – HKU. By spending the first two years at HKU and the third and fourth years at UC Berkeley, students shall obtain a Bachelor of Social Sciences from HKU, and a Bachelor of Arts from UC Berkeley.
