{"id":2901,"date":"2016-08-22T01:37:22","date_gmt":"2016-08-22T01:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/?page_id=2901"},"modified":"2020-05-12T12:30:28","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T04:30:28","slug":"background-and-objectives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/background-and-objectives\/","title":{"rendered":"Background and Objectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10px&#8221;][vc_column_text]Since the early 1980s, Hong Kong has enjoyed a reliable, year-round, uninterrupted supply of good quality water through the import of freshwater from the nearby East River (Dongjiang).\u00a0 Being used to enjoying the convenience of obtaining cheap and clean water with a simple turn of the tap, we may not be aware that Hong Kong is inherently a water-short city.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rapid socio-economic development within the Pearl River Delta region has led to an increasing demand, and an intensified competition, for water in the past two decades.\u00a0 In other major cities, per capita daily water consumption level in the 2001 \u2013 2015 period has declined or flattened. \u00a0On the contrary, Hong Kong\u2019s daily per capita water consumption continued to increase during the same period, albeit at very slow rates.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-3653 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Domestic-water-consumption-of-Asian-cities-1024x567.jpg\" alt=\"Domestic water consumption of Asian cities\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Domestic-water-consumption-of-Asian-cities-1024x567.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Domestic-water-consumption-of-Asian-cities-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Domestic-water-consumption-of-Asian-cities-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.socsc.hku.hk\/jcwise\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Domestic-water-consumption-of-Asian-cities-1180x654.jpg 1180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Launched in 2016,<strong> Jockey Club Water Initiative on Sustainability and Engagement (JC-WISE) <\/strong>is a project funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. In 2019, JC-WISE was extended for another 3 years.
