Founded in 1970, the Department was the first department of psychology in Hong Kong. The pioneer spirit continues to push the Department to strive for excellence and break new grounds. Just in the last 5 years, colleagues have attracted over 32 million dollars in research funds, won prestigious international awards and fellowships, and published well over 20 research papers in international journals ranked in the top 10% in psychology and top 5% in social sciences.
Graduates have obtained post-doctoral fellowships at Stanford, Carnegie-Mellon, and Columbia in the U.S. and at HKU; several now teach at universities in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the region (e.g. Singapore, Australia). Many talented students are attracted to our popular specialties in clinical psychology and educational psychology. Others want to explore how the mind works, to gain insights about who we are and why we act, think, and feel the way we do, and to learn to understand others. All these areas are fascinating in their own right. As a bonus, they can help make the world a better place when applied to real-world problems wisely.
