Smart Water Auditing

Smart technologies–including IoT, machine learning, and edge computing—are being applied to generate high-resolution data on household-level water consumption. Such data will allow researchers, for the first time, to analyse domestic water-use patterns. Findings will help optimize water supply operations and translate into timely feedback to reinforce positive water conservation behaviour.

Water Loss Control

Water lost from a city’s water supply system has led to serious financial and non-financial problems for many municipalities around the world. This project examines the dual questions of what combinations of strategies and technologieshave proven to be the most promising and what institutional pre-conditions are evidently needed for such solutions to be effective.

Water Attitudes Survey

This is a baseline study to ascertain the impact of attitudinal and demographic factors on household water use and perception of water pricing in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen. The findings could serve as a benchmark to help evaluate water conservation campaigns.

Wastewater Reuse

The use of reclaimed water is one key strategy undertaken by municipal governments around the world to ensure long-term water security. This project will develop an integrated framework to evaluate the life-cycle economic, environmental and public health impacts of alternative wastewater reuse scenarios in Hong Kong to provide a sound foundation for formulating policies and regulations.
