His research focuses on the economic causes and consequences of health behaviors. A major focus are studies to better understand the complicated decisions that revolve around end-of-life care. He has published over 300 manuscripts and 2 books in these areas. Based on google scholar, he has an h-index of 78, i10-index of 272 and his publications have been cited over 120,000 times, including in the landmark Supreme Court decision upholding the U.S. Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). Allan has worked as a full professor in Australia, Japan, the UK, and the USA. He is widely recognized as founder and one of the leading advocates of the international public health movement in palliative care, also known as the \u2018compassionate community\u2019 or the \u2018health promoting palliative care\u2019 approach.<\/p><p>With Julian Abel, he is co-editor of the recently published <em>Oxford Textbook of Public Health Palliative Care<\/em> (2022) and <em>Wellbeing at the End-of-Life<\/em> (forthcoming), and a contributing author to the <em>Lancet Commission Report on the Value of Death <\/em>(2022). A medical and public health sociologist, he is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK) and is an honorary professor in theology and religion at Durham University (UK) and in family medicine at McMaster University Medical School (Canada). She was awarded the title of &#8220;China Charming Personality&#8221; in 2016. In 2017, she received the Global Times &#8220;Respect for Life, Glory to Doctors, Humanitarian Spirit Award&#8221;. She is also a TED &amp; Yixi Speaker.<\/p><p>Professor Ning graduated from Peking Union Medical College with a doctoral degree in 1998. She is a former Associate Chief Physician of Oncology Department, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and a Course Director for &#8220;Palliative Medicine&#8221; at Peking Union Medical College. She is the President of the Palliative Care Branch of China Health Management Association. She was an Expert Trainer for National Hospice Care Pilot Programs in 2017, 2019, and 2023.<\/p><p>Professor Ning is also the Chinese Executive Chairman of China-UK Joint Training, Beijing Advance Directives Promotion Association and the Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Palliative Care Branch, China Association of Gerontology and He subsequently conducted post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada before obtaining his first academic appointment at the Department of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa in 2016. In 2017 he transferred his primary appointment to the Division of Palliative Care, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He has held several competitive salary awards, including a Tier 2 Clinical Research Chair in Palliative Care and Predictive Analytics and a Physician Services Incorporated Knowledge Translation Fellowship.<\/p><p>His main focus of research is health services research on frail, older, and marginalized populations. He has published over 300 PubMed papers including several in high impact journals such as JAMA (4), BMJ (6), NEJM (2), CMAJ (12), JAMA Psychiatry (3), PLOS Medicine (2), JAMA Network Open (15) and Intensive Care Medicine (3). He has also obtained over 145 grants totaling over $290 million HKD. He and his trainees have received numerous research and teaching awards.
