I. Hong Kong Student Visa

All students who do not have a right of abode in Hong Kong are required to obtain a student visa to Hong Kong to enable you to study at the University of Hong Kong.  All students MUST obtain visa(s) at your home country and the information provided below is for your reference only.  You shall check with the local embassy should there be any discrepancy.

No refund will be made if students enroll in this progrmme do not have a valid student visa.  Without a valid student visa, you are not regarded as a HKU student which means you will not be able to enjoy the benefits as other students such as transcripts, medical insurance, library and sports facilities access etc.  Upon receipt of your admission letter, you need to apply for a student visa and other tourist visas, if required, immediately.

A. Foreign Passport Holders (except PRC and Taiwan Passport Holders)

General Information

  1. Full set of application documents should be sent to Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty Office will forward the visa application and documents to Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), HKU and Hong Kong Immigration Department for handling.
  2. At least 2 months should be allowed for visa processing (including the processing time for Faculty of Social Sciences, CEDARS and the Hong Kong Immigration Department).
  3. All applicants for a student visa are required to have a local sponsor. For students who are foreign passport holders, you should nominate Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) as visa sponsor.
  4. It is the responsibility of individual student to make appropriate visa arrangement before you come to study in Hong Kong.
  5. Documents Required

  1. A completed official visa application form ID995A (Remember to sign on every page as required on the bottom right corner and please remember the Hong Kong Immigration Department only accept originals, not photocopied or computer signed ID995A forms)
  2. A completed CEDARS visa sponsorship application form;  
  3. A photocopy of your signed acceptance of notice of admission from HKU; 
  4. A photocopy of your passport; 
  5. A photocopy of financial proof, showing that you have adequate means to finance your studies in HK (e.g. latest bank statement, award letter of financial aid, scholarship and studentship, etc) (If you use your parent’s financial statement, please also submit a support letter written by your parents, accompanied by a copy of their latest bank statement);
  6. A declaration form (only to be filled in by those applicants who are currently in Hong Kong)

Application Fee
The application fee for student visa is HKD800 including cost recovery charges for visa sponsorship, visa submission and collection. You can settle the payment by:

  1. A HKD800 bank draft made payable to “The University of Hong Kong”. Please note that you should issue separate bank drafts for programme fee and student visa application fee ; OR
  2. A HKD850 credit card payment authorization form. You need to pay extra bank charges in addition to the standard student visa charge which is HKD850.  The University will only accept the credit card owned by the student. 

Application Procedure

  1. At least 2 months should be allowed for visa processing (including the processing time for Faculty of Social Sciences, CEDARS and the Hong Kong Immigration Department).
  2. Once your student visa documents have reached the Faculty Office, it will be forwarded to CEDARS office within 3 working days for handling. CEDARS will send an acknowledgment email to you as soon as possible upon receipt of your application.
  3. Upon receipt of your admission letter, CEDARS will act as your visa sponsor and forward your complete visa application document set to the Hong Kong Immigration Department for consideration.
  4. In 6 – 8 weeks, Hong Kong Immigration Department will inform CEDARS of your student visa application result.
  5. If Hong Kong Immigration Department has approved your student visa application, CEDARS will pick up the visa label and courier it to you.
  6. CEDARS will confirm the delivery address with you via email before arranging courier service. 
  7. After receiving your student visa label, you have to stick it onto your passport page before landing at the Hong Kong airport.
  8. You should enter Hong Kong with the student visa.
B. People’s Republic of China (PRC) Passport Holders

General information

  1. Full set of documents should be sent to Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty Office will forward the visa application and documents to China Affairs Office (CAO), HKU and Hong Kong Immigration Department for handling.
  2. At least 2 months should be allowed for visa processing (including the processing time for Faculty of Social Sciences, CAO and the Hong Kong Immigration Department).
  3. All applicants for a student visa are required to have a local sponsor. For students who are PRC passport holders (except Macau and Taiwan), you should nominate China Affairs Office (CAO) as visa sponsor.
  4. It is the responsibility of individual student to make appropriate visa arrangement before you come to study in Hong Kong.

  3. A photocopy of your signed acceptance of notice of admission from HKU; 
  4. A photocopy of PRC Identity Card;
  5. A photocopy of your census record (only applicable if the record shows you had a name change);
  6. A photocopy of financial proof, showing that you have adequate means to finance your studies in HK (e.g. latest bank statement, award letter of financial aid, scholarship and studentship, etc.) (If you use your parent’s financial statement, please also submit a copy of your parent’s census record and a declaration written by your parents.);
  7. A declaration form which states that you will use Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) (also known as “Two-way Permit”, in Chinese, 往來港澳通行證or 雙程通行證) as the travelling document to enter Hong Kong from the mainland.

  5. After receiving your student visa label, you have to stick it onto your passport page before landing at the Hong Kong airport. 
  6. Upon receipt of your visa label, please apply an Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) (also known as “Two-way Permit”, in Chinese, 往來港澳通行證or 雙程通行證) and an Exit Endorsement to Hong Kong and Macao (來往港澳簽注) from the Public Security Bureau office where your household registration is kept.
  7. You should enter Hong Kong using the visa, the EEP with exit endorsement with the time frame indicated on the visa label.

 

 
 
II. Travel Documents for Study Tours in China and South Korea
A. Foreign Passport Holders (except PRC and Taiwan Passport Holders)

China
The application for visa to China could be acquired at the local Embassies / Consulates of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) (Please visit http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/fwxx/wgrqz/ for details).  Students should make sure that they have obtained a Single-entry to China as students will fly from Hong Kong to Beijing (Please apply for a double-entry or multi-entry to China if you will visit China other than the programme).  Here is a sample to guide you in completing the numbered sections of the application form for your reference.

Students shall take note of the following:

  • A 2-inch recent photo (in six months) is required.
  • Applicant’s passport should be valid for at least 6 months and have enough blank visa pages.
  • The application for a visa may be declined if the applicant fails to provide with true, clear and complete information.

South Korea (if applicable)
Some passport holders could enjoy a visa-free entry to Seoul. The application for visa to South Korea could be acquired at the local Embassies.  Here is a sample to guide you in completing the numbered sections of the application form for your reference.

C. Hong Kong Identity Card and HKSAR Passport Holders

China
Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card holders are required to apply for a “Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents” (in Chinese, 港澳居民來往內地通行證 or 回鄉咭)

South Korea
HKSAR passport holders could enjoy a visa-free entry to Seoul up to 90 days.
