Ginger  (Zingiber officinale)  is a herbaceous perennial  commonly used in Chinese and Asian dishes. It has a long growing period from March to December. The underground rhizome of  ginger gives hot and fragrant taste and can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried, in oil form, or as juice.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the Zingiberaceae family, to which also belong ginger and cardamom. It is native to India and Southeast Asia, and commonly used as spice or colouring agent in many Asian cooking recipes, such as curry and turmeric rice. It has become a popular healthy food in Western countries in recent years.

Coffee

Coffee tree is a woody perennial evergreen plant belongs to the Rubiaceae family. Coffee plant is native to tropical areas and there are many different coffee species. Shade-tolerated species are selected to grow at Lai Chi Wo in order to create agro-forest habitat for conservation purpose. The fruits of coffee plant are collected and treated to produce Hong Kong coffee beans for making coffee drinks.

Non-GM Papaya

Genetically modified organism may have potential adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

Over 40% of papaya sold or grown in Hong Kong is genetically-modified. Due to Lai Chi Wo’s isolated location, farmers can produce non-GM papaya with lower genetic pollution risk. Two non-GM varieties are grown at Lai Chi Wo: 紅妃 and 台農二號 .

White Radish

Radish is a root crop, which grows best in cool weather. In every winter, fresh and juicy radish will be harvested at Lai Chi Wo. They are the best ingredient choice for radish cake and hotpot.

Paddy Rice

Paddy rice farming is the traditional farming production mode of most of the rural villages in South China, including Hong Kong. It is the staple food of local people and many rice recipes have been developed. Paddy fields can also provide wetland habitats for wildlife. Since 2014, paddy farming has been resumed at Lai Chi Wo.

Winter melon

Winter melon is the hugest among melons, which can be weight up to 50 catties. Such large melons were commonly seen in the past. Nowadays, the size of a family became smaller, thus mini winter melons are more popular in the market. Winter melon grows best and harvests in summer, which is suitable to be cooked with meat, or made into soup and drinks, while mini melon can become doubled-boiled winter melon soup with shrimps.
