Vision and Mission
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1967 and has since undergone rapid expansion and significant transformation. The Faculty comprises the Departments of Geography, Politics and Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work and Social Administration, Sociology, and Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Through our focus on social innovation (SI) and global citizenship (GC), we seek to contribute to the advancement of society and the development of leaders locally, regionally, and globally.
The Faculty aspires to be a world-leading source of social science research about Greater China, Asia, and the world. We have identified the following research clusters as areas of focus over the next 5 - 10 years: Contemporary China: social, political, and spatial transformation; Mental Wellness: from brain to society; and Cities 2050: urbanisation, mobility, and sustainability. We are building these clusters with the foundation of six multidisciplinary research centres that provide a platform for research interaction and collaboration among colleagues on campus and in the wider world. In addition, we are developing our capacity in social science research methods.
The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong seeks to make a positive social contribution through a global presence, regional significance and engagement with the rest of China. The Faculty delivers impact through internationalization, innovation and interdisciplinarity. It attracts and nurtures global scholars through excellence in research, teaching and learning and knowledge exchange. The Faculty aims to produce citizens with a global perspective who are critical thinkers, socially aware, ready to embrace diversity, and seek to make an impact on society.
