Introduction

The Conference consists of seven panels and brings together renowned scholars and professionals from China and overseas, to discuss the development of Chinese political economy and the role of governance within it. A number of critical questions will be addressed, such as: has collective leadership become institutionalized at the Party center, and if so what are the principal interests represented within the collective leadership; what is the relationship between the Party’s leading organs and the managerial, technical and scientific elites emerging in China with economic modernization; and does the challenge of innovation require a broader intellectual and cultural pluralism in China than now exists, as well as a more formal codification of legal and constitutional frameworks. It is hoped different perspectives and values would be presented and the Conference will be able to enhance the understanding of Contemporary China.
