Academic Dress
 
The full set of academic dress, including cap, hood and gown can only be borrowed at HKU's Gown Room.
 

a) Loan of Academic Dress

Timetable and Venue for Collection
The distribution venue is at the upper ground foyer (outside JUPAS Office) of Knowles Building. The collection date of gown will be announced at HKU Congregation website.

Return of Academic Dress
All loaned academic dresses must be returned to the Gown Room of the University after the Congregation. The return date of gown to be announced at HKU Congregation website.

b) Academic Dress

Gowns
Bachelors A robe of black stuff of the simple traditional shape with pointed sleeve.
Masters A robe of black stuff, Oxford MA pattern.
Doctors (undress) A robe of black silk, Oxford DPhil pattern.
Doctors (full dress) A robe of scarlet panama with silk facings of appropriate colour. (DSocSc - dark green; PsyD - dark green)
Doctors of Philosophy
(full dress)		 A robe of maroon panama with facings of deep blue.


Caps
Bachelors and Masters College cap, 'mortar-board' pattern.
Doctors Black velvet cap, bonnet-shaped and soft, with a hard round brim and a narrow cord of gold at the junction of crown and brim.


Hoods - Faculty of Social Sciences
Bachelors Deep blue with dark green silk edge lining, 3.5 cm wide.
Masters, DSocSc (undress) and PsyD (undress) Deep blue with dark green silk lining throughout, the lining being turned over to the depth of 1 cm.
DSocSc and PsyD (full dress) Scarlet panama with dark green silk lining throughout.


All Faculties
MPhil Deep blue with maroon silk lining throughout, the lining being turned over to the depth of 1 cm.
PhD Maroon panama with deep blue silk lining throughout.

 

c) Proper Attire

Gown and Hood
Male:
  1. A dark suit should be worn with a white shirt and a sober tie
  2. The loop of the hood should be firmly attached to either the 2nd or 3rd button of the shirt with the tie over the top of the halter
  3. The hood halter should NEVER be placed over the tie
  4. Unless it is absolutely necessary the use of safety pins should be avoided
  5. A tie must always be worn

Female:
  1. A dark skirt and a white blouse with buttons should be worn
  2. The loop of the hood should be attached to one of the blouse buttons

Cap
Put on the cap with the base lining without a seam at the front, the other side with the seam at the back.
