The Department of Social Work, established in 1967, is the first social work education institution in Hong Kong to train social service personnel to enhance the well-being of the community and to promote social justice. It was renamed as the Department of Social Work and Social Administration in 1987 to register the expansion of the Department's education, research and community services to social administration and international social policies. The Department will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2010 in offering social work education in HKU.
The staff team comprises locally and globally renowned experts in social work; social policies; social administration; sociology; clinical, counseling and medical psychology; criminology; law; political science; health and behavioral health. They are very active in research, education and service collaborations with local, Chinese and international academics and practitioners in fields ranging from micro to macro social and public services. Working closely with the Centre on Behavioral Health, Sau Po Centre on Ageing and HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, they teach over 600 current students which include undergraduates, taught postgraduates, MPhil and PhD candidates.
The graduates include Endowed Professors, Vice-Presidents and Professors in esteemed Universities all over the world, Legco Members, Directors of NGOs and Government Departments, Consultants to Government policies and projects, as well as leading practitioners in cutting-edge social service research and social services. They are supported by dedicated alumni who contribute as mentors and donors to further advance the established international training arrangements for their students.
