The Department of Sociology was established in 1967 at the same time as the Faculty of Social Sciences, which is the study about cultures and societies of people around the world, though naturally, at The University of Hong Kong, there is a strong emphasis on Hong Kong and China.
The Department provides students with the sociological tools theory and methods to think about and analyse everyday life in Hong Kong, China and globally. The Department also has expertise in Anthropology and Criminology.
The courses offered by the Department are grouped under three main streams: (1) Asian Societies and Global Networks, (2) Criminal Justice and (3) Media, Culture and Heritage. Underlying these three streams is the Department's specialism and strength in social structural analysis, anthropological expertise and criminological research.
