James
Gomez
is a researcher, writer and a political commentator. He holds a
B.Soc. Sci (Hons) in Political Sciene from the National University
of Singapore (1992) and a MA in Politics from the University of
Essex, United Kingdom. He founded the Think Centre (Singapore) <www.thinkcentre.org>
on 16 July 1999 and published Self-Censorship: Singapore's Shame
in September that year, James also co-founded Think Centre (Asia)
<www.thinkcentreasia.org>
in Bangkok in August 2001. For his use of the Internet for political
communication and mobilizing people, he was identified separately
at various times in 2001 as one of "Asia's 50 most powerful
communicators" by Asiaweek, "An Asian Trailblazer"
by Newsweek and an "Asian Making a Difference" by FEER.
His book, Internet Politics: Surveillance & Intimidation in
Singapore was released in 2002. In 2003, he was elected to the Central
Executive Committee of the Workersˇ¦ Party, Singapore where he serves
as its second Assistant Secretary-General and Chairman of the Policy
and Communications Committee. He penned the Workersˇ¦ Partyˇ¦s political
treatise the ˇ§New Poorˇ¨ for the 2001 general elections. He is
presently Research and Communications Manager, Friedrich Naumann
Foundation, Regional Office, Thailand. He has co-edited Political
Dimensions of the Asian Crisis (2000); Democratic Transitions in
Asia (2001) and September 11 and Political Freedom: Asian Perspectives
(2002). His latest contribution, Cyberactivism: How Asians Beat
Media Censorship (co-edited with Steven Gan and Uwe Johannen) will
be released in January 2004.
