Objective


The major research objective of HKU Strategic Research Theme (SRT) in Contemporary China is to better understand the impact of China’s rapid development on society, politics, and economy, and on China’s evolving regional and global role.

Network

Hong Kong’s location as part of China, but yet separate from the Mainland has clear advantages such as proximity, cultural affinity, and ready availability of Chinese-language materials.

Critical Mass

A cadre of China experts in HKU is available in the Faculties of Arts, Architecture, Business and Economics, Education, Law, and Social Sciences.

Areas and Activities


The theme of Contemporary China is divided into three broad areas, Urban Development, Social Transformation, and Globalizing China. Experts in these areas will conduct research, hold various academic activities such as symposia, workshops and seminar, bid for funding outside the University, and engage scholars in these areas outside the University. Eminent scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, the rest of Asia and overseas will be invited to the University to share their research experience and search for international collaboration opportunities with regional and overseas partners.
