The Family of Dr SC Fan, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, has generously donated over two million dollars in 2003 to contribute to the Social Science Endowment Fund.

In memory of Dr SC Fan, the donation is used to support an annual SC Fan Memorial Lecture to be delivered by internationally pronounced scholars or experts in social science and related disciplines. The interest generated from the donation may also be used to support educational, research and community activities of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Serena Yang Distinguished Lecture Series

This series has been made possible by the generosity and support of Dr Serena Yang, a graduate of the Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan and prominent in the local business community, who first came to HKU as a visiting student in the early 1990s. Wishing to try something new and to study for her own sake, she embarked on a series of undergraduate psychology courses, making many friends amongst her fellow students and quickly becoming fired by the enthusiasms of her teachers. It was from this experience that she decided to make donations which have supported initiatives in teaching and staff development, research, and ─ through scholarships ─ also made it possible for two or three students each year to go on exchange to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. It was from one of her donations that this series of distinguished lectures has been made possible, and for all her contributions, the University is indebted.
