With a history of 40 years, the Faculty plays a significant nurturing role for the leaders of tomorrow. Its graduates have played a pivotal role in shaping the economic, social, political and educational development of Hong Kong. Many of them have become outstanding leaders in private and public sectors. The Hong Kong University Social Sciences Alumni Association was established to strengthen ties among fellow alumni and the Faculty community. The Association also serves the society effectively through its strong network.

In 2007, the Faculty of Social Sciences celebrated its 40th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Faculty was keen to honour some of its most distinguished alumni. It therefore created a 40 under 40 awards scheme designed to salute the achievements of 40 outstanding alumni from the Faculty's first 40 years. The Awards were presented at the 40th Anniversary Reunion Dinner which was held on Wednesday December 5, 2007.
