HKU Common Core Curriculum is an essential part of academic induction to facilitate the transition from secondary school to university. It is designed to provide a key common learning experience for all HKU students and to broaden their horizons beyond their chosen disciplinary fields of study. The Faculty of Social Sciences is a core unit providing common core courses to students. These common core courses are closely related to liberal studies in the secondary school education.
In order to allow students to have a taste of the social sciences education, we have chosen a few common core and introductory courses for secondary school students. A 45-minute debriefing session will be conducted following the mass lecture which provides students first-hand experience of the tutorial-like learning pedagogy of the University. |

Green roof talk and tour
(Geography) |
Green roofs are increasingly installed in cities to bring widespread environmental and other benefits. Installing them in Hong Kong’s schools can provide high-quality green spaces in safe and accessible locations to meet educational needs, lower classroom temperature to reduce air-conditioning electricity consumption, and provide natural ambience for field studies of nature and outdoor recreation. |

GIS [geographic information system] is a highly applied subject area so getting the students to take practical classes is an essential learning component. We will use Google Earth and geo-exploration applications available via the Internet [such as the National Geographic Teaching Resources] to undertake virtual discovery and impart spatial reasoning. |

Exhibition: James Wong – from Sham Shui Po to HKU, an interactive journey
(Sociology) |
James Wong (黃霑) composed and set lyrics to numerous popular songs that continue to shape the ethos of Hong Kong people. For this exhibition, we go back to his formative years to see what in turn shaped his life and work. James Wong resided in Sham Shui Po when young and entered HKU in 1960. New media artists will set up interactive installations at the two locations, bringing to life the contrasting settings and multiple cultural influences that helped turn a new page for James Wong as well as Hong Kong society. |
